Heating definition, our interpretation of the word heating, means of making a building comfortably warm relative to a colder outside temperature. Old, primitive methods of heating a building or a room within it include the open fire, the fireplace, and the stove. In ancient Rome a heating system, called a hypocaust, warmed a building by passing hot gases from a furnace through enclosed passages under the floors and behind the walls before releasing them outside.

The principal modern systems that are used to heat a building are classified as warm air, hot water, steam, or electricity. In a forced air system, a fuel of some type is heated and and is forced with a blower motor through warm-air ducts and enters the rooms through outlets, while cooler air in the rooms passes into return ducts that lead back to the furnace. This method is a continuous cycle that operates by a controller called a thermostat. 

Heating by a hot-water system has a boiler for heating the water that is sent through connecting pipes to radiators and convectors, the latter devices being metal enclosures containing hot-water pipes surrounded by metal fins, these are called fin tubed baseboards, and the water is circulated through the radiators or baseboards by a circulation pump.

Does working from your home mean your not as worthy as a contractor working out of a business shop? Absolutely not, however guys that can’t keep a job in the heating and air conditioning business because they don’t have a drivers license or the have drug and alcohol problems, start up business to get fast cash from unsuspecting customers and theirs a lot of con men out there” and I see and hear this from our existing  customers and new customers that tell us the horror.  I hired an employee that had work for 6 other  ‘”reputable” heating company’s prior to me hiring him and I shortly realized why he could not keep a job

This has been dilemma in the heating and air conditioning business over the past 15 or twenty years or so, these hvac schools promise the world to these students telling them that they will get a great job in the hvac industry only to find out that no hvac company wants to hire them. And I’ll explain why’

It is my seen opinion that it’s not the fault of the new hvac job seeker that go to schools, but the fault lies with these hvac schools that are not teaching these guys or gals really what they need to know to be a hiring candidate by us hvac contractors.

These schools teaches the Curriculum what the state or feds financial funding makes mandatory so grants for these schools are given to students to attend.  My thought is why are these schools not teaching beyond that? These instructors in the past or are still practicing the hvac repair or installations and why would they” the instructors not share their knowledge of these things with their students of what they need to know for gainful employment in the heatingrepair-chicago? Is it that they side jobs for these instructors will shrink?  I know a company that actually performs hvac services from a car, you may say whats wrong with that? think about it  and make your own decisions about that…, this person smokes blunts all day and he pays  some one to drive him from call to call and 9 times out of 10 he has to go pick up the parts. His driver parks around the corner and this person will walk to the address. Only in America”

Residential steam boiler Chicago

Steam boilers Chicago, Repair,  replace parts or install a new steam boiler. Not all residential hvac contractors install residential and light commercial boilers.

We here at Chicago Heating enjoy the challenge of a big clunky old steam boiler repair or replacement.  Repairing steam boilers can be a challenge, let me explain’ there`s times when the steam boiler piping are playing a symphony of clang clang clang, now why would the piping be clanging like that? 

There`s a few simple repair tips to alleviate these clangs. Often times over years a steam boiler builds up sediment in the radiators as well as in the bottom of the boiler itself.  That’s why its important and we stress this to steam boiler owners to flush your system once a week at a minimum, especially when the boiler and radiators are really old.  If the steam boiler was installed correctly then there is a skim valve at the boiler water level for skimming oils and such that float on the top half of the boiler, that skim valve should be open weekly to remove oils and such. Remember to use proper safety procedures when performing these tasks. If your not sure how to perform this maintenance, call us at 312-243-9896!

Other reasons for pipe clanging is lack of condensate return water returning back to the boiler.  Let me explain where the water comes from, as the steam travels through the piping and radiators the steam gives off its heat and by doing so the steam turns back to condensate and the process is continual.  Reasons for this could be that the radiators are pitched the opposite way from the steam shut off valves,why is this a problem?  the radiators should have a pitch back towards the valve so the water can travel back to the boiler for the process to continue. Why would the steam radiators be tipped the wrong way? often times in older homes ,apartments and some commercial structures the wood or surface the radiators are standing on sink due to the weight of the radiators.

Other problems related to clanging is basement renovations. Why is this a problem you may ask?  We see from time to time where  the low hanging pipes are bothersome and the homeowners will have them lifted a bit and this has caused many of steam boilers to get to clanging, because the lifted piping was traping condensate. If you remodel your basement and you keep your steam boiler, and you want to raise your piping remember its expensive and has to be performed by a skilled Steam boiler contractor.
